A 34-year-old White male presented for a contact lens fitting. His spectacle correction was –3.25 –0.50 x 174 OD and –2.50 sphere OS. He had a history of giant papillary conjunctivitis, resulting in a relative intolerance to soft contact lens wear.

Objective axial length analysis and longitudinal growth tracking have become increasingly important in pediatric myopia management. In our practice, the OCULUS Myopia software platform on the OCULUS Pentacam® AXL Wave has helped us better evaluate progression risk through BHVI Growth Curves and annualized axial growth analysis, while the WAVE Lens Designer Software has streamlined customized orthokeratology lens design through the tomography/-topography-driven software. Together, these technologies have been a game-changer in clinical decision-making, parent communication, and treatment efficiency.

As a recent study reveals a high prevalence of keratoconus in a pediatric population, a new form of lamellar keratoplasty, CTAK, is expanding the treatment options for affected patients.

The Pentacam®, particularly its Belin ABCD Progression Display, is an invaluable tool for corneal specialists. It provides a detailed, accurate assessment of the cornea, enabling early diagnosis, careful monitoring of disease progression, and informed decision-making regarding treatment options. This ultimately leads to better outcomes for patients with keratoconus.

Flap striae, or microscopic folds in the corneal flap created during LASIK, can cause visual disturbances such as blurred vision or halos around lights. Using the Pentacam® AXL Wave to monitor these conditions confers specific benefits that enhance both the diagnostic process and patient outcomes.

The study assessed the impact of tear optics on the repeatability of the Pentacam AXL Wave compared to the i-Trace. All measurements with Pentacam AXL Wave with OSI < 1 had excellent repeatability, intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) ranging from 0.88 for HOA, to 0.92 for LOA. The Sw, TRT, and COV of all aberration measurements were significantly lower (better) than those of iTrace. Conclusion: Tear optics affected repeatability of Pentacam Wave and i-Trace. Pentacam Wave had better repeatability in eyes with a poor tear film as compared to i-Trace. The study assessed the impact of tear optics on the repeatability of the Pentacam AXL Wave compared to the i-Trace.

Besides the assessment of the device performance for normal and healthy eyes, even more interesting are their performance in abnormal - the challenging eyes. Due to the fact, that the Pentacam AXL Wave outperformed the i-Trace in the normal, healthy eye group anyway, only the repeatability of the Pentacam AXL Wave and the comparison between the two devices was analysed in the study. METHODS: In this cross-sectional, observational study, normal, keratoconus, and CXL groups with 125 eyes in each of the three groups were included. All eyes underwent three sets of measurements, at a single visit, using the Pentacam AXL Wave (Oculus Optikgeräte GmbH) and i-Trace (Tracey Technologies). Keratometry, pachymetry, objective refraction, and total ocular aberrations including. CONCLUSIONS: The Pentacam AXL Wave showed comparable repeatability in the normal and keratoconus groups, but was poorer in the CXL group.

The Belin ABCD Progression Display Identifies Keratoconus Progression Earlier Than Conventional Metrics. A new study conducted by Dr Eray Atalay and Dr Onur Ozlap was published in the American Journal of Ophthalmology confirming the unique approach in the OCULUS Pentacam®. 277 eyes of 155 patients between 18 and 35 years of age where included with a maximum follow-up time of ten years.

This study assessed the repeatability and agreement of the Pentacam AXL Wave vs the i-Trace. Pentacam AXL Wave had repeatability with an ICC for total ocular aberrations ranging from 0.84 for HOAs to 0.92 for LOAs and for corneal from 0.76 for HOAs to 0.86 for LOAs. The Sw, TRT, and CoV of all aberrations were significantly lower (better) than those of iTrace (P < .001). … Conclusions: The repeatability estimates for wavefront aberrations using Pentacam AXL Wave were significantly better than those using i-Trace. Both devices showed excellent correlations for total ocular aberrations. This study assessed the repeatability and agreement of the Pentacam AXL Wave vs the i-Trace.
