With around 10,000 delegates, this year’s APAO was a great opportunity for OCULUS to present its products mainly to Chinese customers. The OCULUS Pentacam® continues to excite cataract refractive experts due to its evolving diagnostic functionalities. Its use in surgery candidate selection, i.e. keratoectasia risk screening was further discussed during lectures by Michael Belin, MD, and the unique Pentacam software Belin/Ambrosio Display (BAD) mentioned by Dipika Patel, MD during the Nakajima Award Lecture.
The unique OCULUS Corvis® ST was extensively tested during exhibition days, too. Its role in measuring corneal biomechanics before and after CXL treatment, and their impact on evaluation on glaucoma were discussed in lectures by Stephen D. Klyce, PhD and Christopher Leung, PhD.
Doubtlessly the star of the APAO 2015 at the OCULUS booth goes to the Keratograph 5M for its applications in dry eye diagnostics such as infrared meibography. Several units Keratograph 5M were also utilized for non-invasive tear film breakup time measurements on neighboring booths of pharmaceutical companies manufacturing dry eye medications. Guangzhou DMK (China) Technology. Ltd., the exclusive distributor of OCULUS products in China, organized a brilliant academic seminar for Chinese attendees prior to APAO discussing Keratograph 5M dry eye applications.
OCULUS important product line in retinal surgery, the OCULUS SDI®/BIOM®, was presented with its reusable and disposable models. The BIOM® ready is the world’s first disposable non-contact wide angle retina microscope viewing system.
We want to thank all customers who visited the OCULUS booth during APAO 2015 and participated in the booth quiz - congratulations to all winners of fabulous prizes. We look forward to seeing you again at one of our next events in Asia!

On 8 August 2014 OCULUS Optikgeräte GmbH obtained a preliminary injunction from the Regional Court of Frankfurt a.M. against Oculus VR, Inc. on account of illegal use of the OCULUS trade name. Under this injunction Oculus VR, Inc. is prohibited to use the OCULUS trade name for smart glasses and other products, establishing a ban on the sale of VR glasses in Germany under the designation “Oculus Rift”. The injunction was granted ex-parte and without an oral hearing. The decision may be subject to Appeal.
The beginnings of OCULUS date back to the year 1895. The Wetzlar-based company has thus been active worldwide in the field of medical engineering and ocular diagnostics for 120 years. As early as 1920 OCULUS Optikgeräte GmbH presented a universal trial frame for visual acuity testing. The name of OCULUS has been in use since 1932.
This family enterprise of long standing offers instruments of the highest quality standards for diagnosis, training and treatment which have earned it an excellent reputation among opticians, ophthalmologists, surgeons, optometrists and occupational physicians alike. Already in the late 1980s instruments developed and manufactured by OCULUS Optikgeräte GmbH were making use of computers for their control as well as results evaluation.
Oculus VR, Inc. has been in the market only since 2012, primarily selling its so-called VR glasses under the name of Oculus and in so doing infringing the rights of OCULUS Optikgeräte GmbH.
After obtaining the temporary injunction OCULUS Optikgeräte GmbH continued to be open to an amicable agreement on the worldwide use of the name of Oculus. In the end however an agreement was made impossible by the inacceptable views of Oculus VR, Inc.. OCULUS Optikgeräte GmbH therefore finds itself compelled to take action under the injunction against the continued sale of smart glasses under the designation of "Oculus Rift".
