As everyone knows, the oxygen transmissibility of soft contact lenses is especially important when it comes to length of wear and wearing comfort. More and more soft contact lenses fulfill this demand. As yet, most contact lens manufacturers nevertheless only quote Dk/t-values at the center for -3.00 D. Since this value depends directly on the refractive power of the lens and thus on its thickness, such questions as “what is the DK/t-value for +6 D or the periphery of the lens?” could not previously be answered.

This has all changed with the “Oximap”, which can be used to visualize the oxygen transmissibility of various lens types and thicknesses. The Oximap can be employed to make direct comparisons of various soft contact lens materials. Dependent on the refrative power this map is individually “fitted” and can thus contribute to the sale of higher-quality and better contact lenses because this demonstrates to the patient in layman’s terms what a better lens material does for him. What goes for other things goes for the sale of contact lenses as well: the most convincing decisions are made when the customer can see something with his own eyes – in this case literally.
