OCULUS @ ESCRS 2009 – An approach into a new dimension[16.09.09]
It seems that the European cataract and refractive ophthalmologists have overcome the global economic crisis. The Barcelona meeting could be considered as a promising outlook to the future. A vibrating feeling of hope and enjoyment filled the air of the CCIB (Centre Convencions Internacional Barcelona) in Barcelona.
The early detection of ectatic change is of
paramount importance to the refractive surgeon.
Anterior curvature and ultrasonic pachymetry, alone, does not provide enough information to detect early corneal disease. The combination of anterior and posterior elevation and complete pachymetric data gives the clinician a more complete view of the structure of the cornea and allows for more effective screening.
Portable automated perimetry devices play an important role in glaucoma screening; by design they function reliably even outside of traditional eye clinics, reaching out, therefore, to an increased number of patients. Moreover, they can be successfully used in regions with poor medical coverage or in mobile screening stations.
